That's only about 13 to 15 years of production under this name, which is a big part of why it's rare. It's firmly pre-Prohibition, and probably about 125 years old or more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Sweet Valley winery grew out of an earlier operation. Jacob Rush started a winery near the north bay in 1861, then built a new two-story limestone winery in the Sweet Valley area of the island near Division Street. In 1879, Otto Brown, formerly foreman for the Kelley's Island Wine Company, bought the Rush Winery. He enlarged the cellar to hold 140,000 gallons, making it the island's second-largest winery. In 1887, the Otto Brown Winery merged with R.R. Moysey, Henry Triechman, Frederick Kastning and Adam Miller to form the Sweet Valley Wine Company.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eIt was a big operation for its day. The winery averaged about 500,000 gallons a year, and most of it was shipped to New York City and western cities. A distillery at the back handled brandy, sherry, port and altar wine, and about 150 acres of vineyards supplied the winery. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Sweet Valley name didn't last long. Brown ran the winery until 1900, when it was reorganized as the Monarch Wine Company, and in 1902 the main winery moved to Sandusky for railroad access while the cellars stayed on the island. The later story is sad. Monarch and the Kelley's Island Wine Co. got through Prohibition by switching to grape juice, but were destroyed in August 1933 by a grass fire started by sparks from a quarry locomotive.
